Frequently asked questions
Does Minutesmith work offline?
Yes. Recording, transcription, and summarizing all run on your Mac. Download a transcription model once and everything keeps working in full airplane mode — no internet required. The only time anything leaves your Mac is if you deliberately connect a cloud AI provider with your own key.
Where are my recordings stored, and who can see them?
Recordings, transcripts, summaries, and notes are saved as plain files in Minutesmith's own folder on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded to a server of ours, because we don't run one — there's no account, no analytics, and no tracking. Delete any meeting from inside the app, or remove the files yourself, whenever you like.
Can it record audio from Zoom, Teams, and Meet?
Yes. Minutesmith captures your microphone and your Mac's system audio together, so the transcript has everyone on the call — not just your half. It uses macOS Screen Recording permission for system audio only: audio, never video or screenshots. If a recording comes out silent, check the Permissions section below.
Do I need an account or a subscription?
No account, ever — there's nothing to sign up for. Minutesmith is a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, not a subscription. Launch pricing is $19.99 — 50% off the regular $39.99 — through October 31, 2026.
Which Macs does it support?
Minutesmith runs on macOS 12 or later on Apple silicon (M1 and later). On-device transcription uses your Mac's own GPU.
Can I use my own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama models?
Yes. Summaries run on a built-in on-device model by default, but you can connect OpenAI, Anthropic, or a self-hosted Ollama instance with your own API key. When you do, your text goes straight from your Mac to that provider using your key — never through a server of ours. It's optional and off by default.
Is it legal to record my meetings?
It depends where you and the other participants are. Many places require the consent of one or more parties before a conversation can be recorded, and you're responsible for meeting the consent and notice rules for each meeting you record. See the Privacy Policy for the details, and check with a lawyer if you're unsure — nothing here is legal advice.

- Any error message shown in the app
Permissions
Minutesmith needs Microphone access to hear you, and Screen Recording permission to grab system audio from your meeting apps (audio only — no video, no screenshots of your screen). If a recording comes out silent or half-there, pop into System Settings → Privacy & Security and make sure both are switched on.
